Coldplay Ticket Scalping Sparks Outrage

Coldplay’s India Tour Triggers Scalping Controversy and Police Investigation

Coldplay’s highly anticipated India tour has sparked outrage among fans and led to a police investigation after scalpers purchased low-cost tickets to resell online for over $1,000 each.

Tickets for the British rock band’s three January concerts in Mumbai sold out within minutes on BookMyShow, a leading Indian ticketing platform. Fans were furious when $70 (₹6,000) tickets began appearing on resale sites at significantly inflated prices.

"The tickets are being sold at 10, 20, eve n 30 times their original price," said Anna Abraham, a 19-year-old student. "I wouldn’t feel good knowing I paid 30 times more than what I could have."

Mumbai lawyer Amit Vyas filed a complaint, alleging collusion between BookMyShow and scalpers to profit from the inflated resale market. Vyas reported that none of the 100 concert regulars he contacted had secured tickets, raising suspicions of misconduct. Police have since questioned BookMyShow’s Chief Operating Officer.

In response, BookMyShow denied any involvement with unauthorized resellers, stating: "Scalping and black marketing of tickets is strictly condemned and punishable by law in India. BookMyShow vehemently opposes this practice."

The controversy is the latest in a series of ticketing scandals tied to major events. In 2022, Taylor Swift fans faced similar frustrations during Ticketmaster’s presale debacle for her Eras Tour, reigniting criticism over scalping, hidden fees, and limited ticket availability.

As Coldplay fans voice their disappointment, the incident highlights ongoing challenges in the ticketing industry, particularly with high-demand events.
